The Roman Catholic parish church Gerersdorf is located in the center of the municipality Gerersdorf in the district of St. Pölten-Land in Lower Austria . The church consecrated to St. John the Baptist belongs to the Melk deanery in the diocese of St. Pölten . The parish church is a listed building .

history

A parish was mentioned in a document in 1313 and 1431/1434. Around 1600 the church was a branch of St. Pölten and from 1781 it was again a parish. In 1966 there was a merger to form the Gerersdorf parish with Prinzersdorf, see the Prinzersdorf branch church .

The hall church, which is essentially Gothic, was changed in the post-Gothic style in the 17th century and, with Josef Wissgrill (1747), received a semicircular closing choir and a renewed south tower in baroque forms. The tower was destroyed in 1945 and renewed until 1954. In 1983 the church was restored inside and 1985 outside.

architecture

The simple nave with a choir with a slightly higher eaves line has a shared gable roof with a beaver tail covering. The small portal hall under a hipped roof on the western gable front shows a wall painting and wall carving of Christ in the mandorla flanked by John the Baptist, Maria, Peter and Paul von Sepp Zöchling (1952). The west portal shows scenes from the life of John the Baptist by Maria Sturm (1952) with six sheet copper plates .
