history
As early as 1231 there was a wooden chapel in the “Kirchschlag” district, which belonged to the mother parish of Abtenau . Today's parish Gosau was founded in 1500. The current church was rebuilt between 1500 and 1507. Along with the Sebastian altar in the parish church of Hallstatt, this Sebastian church is one of the oldest evidence of the Sebastian cult in Austria. The tower was built between 1864 and 1865, the nave and the choir were extended in 1874.
Church building
The nave has a single nave and four bays. The choir ends with a 5/8 end. Over the nave and choir is a gothic net rib vault . The north tower has a pointed helmet . The Gothic west portal is decorated with three primitive plastic heads.
Furnishing
The furnishings are largely neo-Gothic . On the baroque high altar is a baroque figure of St. Sebastian from the second quarter of the 18th century.
