The Roman Catholic parish church of Griesbach stands on a hill in the west of the village of Griesbach in the municipality of Groß Gerungs in the Zwettl district in Lower Austria . The parish church , consecrated to St. Nicholas of Myra , belongs to the Deanery Zwettl of the diocese of St. Pölten . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .

history

A chapel was assumed for the 13th century. In 1431 a church was mentioned in a document. From 1580 to 1650 the church was Protestant . In 1784 the church was elevated to a parish church. The core of the probably late Romanesque building with a Gothic rectangular choir from the 14th century was given a late Gothic north tower in the 15th century. In 1797 the nave was newly vaulted and in 1868 it was extended to the west with two yokes.

architecture

The church is surrounded by a cemetery wall. The simple nave has a late Gothic barred south portal with a flat cloverleaf arch. The flat arch windows were used in 1793 and 1868. The slightly retracted Gothic choir has a pointed arched window in the east and a flat arched window in the south. The tower on the north side of the choir has chamfered rectangular windows, arched sound windows in the bell storey, and has a tent roof. The basement of the tower is an ossuary. To the west of the tower is a 20th century vestibule.

The single-nave, six-bay nave has oblong square vaults over belt arches on pillars. The music gallery stands on granite pillars from the 19th century. The almost square choir is slightly raised and has a ribbed vault with a disc keystone. There is a rectangular chamfered session niche in the choir with a wall fresco above with a coat of arms and a shield from the 15th century.

Furnishing

The new-Romanesque high altar was created by the Johann Weiss Sons company (1895). He bears the figures of Saints Nicholas, Leopold and Agnes. The right side altar, with a classicist tabernacle, has putti, lamb of God and a dove from the former high altar from around 1797. The former high altar picture St. Nikolaus painted Martin Johann Schmidt (1797). The octagonal font consists of granite pieces from the 14th and 18th centuries.

The parapet organ was built by Franz Jüstel (1869).
