history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 860 (?) And is one of the oldest churches in Styria. In 1147 a church was mentioned in a document. The first stone church was consecrated in 1158. The parish church is remarkably older than the nearby Seckau Abbey and was incorporated in 1151 but removed again in 1782. Restorations were carried out in 1803, 1955, 1961 and 1998, with the latter uncovering important frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries.

architecture

The square choir tower and the northern nave wall have been preserved from the Romanesque church building. The late Gothic two-aisled three-bay nave hall was built at the end of the 15th century under a ribbed vault on octagonal pillars and consoles on octagonal services, in the east yoke there are two round keystones with reliefs dove and head. The south-east corner of the nave is bevelled with a Gothic pointed arch window in the sloping surface, another two-lane Gothic tracery window has been preserved in the south wall, all other windows are baroque. The figural window glazing was created from 1912 to 1914 through Tyrolean glass painting. The west gallery stands on a needle cap barrel and shows stucco on the front wall and the year 1641.

The east facade shows a walled up round window with fish bubble tracery with two small round windows next to it. The west portal has a keel-arched profile, the pointed south portal is simple, the doors have Gothic fittings. The porches of the portal are baroque. The two-bay sacristy attached to the north of the choir is Gothic with ribbed vaults on consoles with round keystones and was restored in 1961.

In the east of the north aisle, behind a square-walled, round-arched front arch, the Romanesque choir square adjoins under a groin vault with a segmented apse in the east. The apse only cuts into the wall and is only visible on the outside through a small, narrow Romanesque arched window. On the fron arch there is a Gothic fresco Last Judgment around 1430, uncovered in 1955.

Above the choir square is the stone-walled tower with round-arched triple acoustical windows with columns with cube capitals and fighters and underneath double round-arched windows and on the lower floors simply slits of light. The tower wears a pointed helmet

Furnishing

The high altar with gallery portals around 1700 bears the statues Sebastian and Leonhard and shows the high altar picture St. Rupert from 1852, repainted during a renovation.

The Gothic font is twelve-sided and round at the top.

The organ was built in 1961. A bell was cast in 1855.
