The parish church of the Holy Trinity of Waitzendorf (municipality of Schrattenthal) in Lower Austria was built on a hill on the south side of the village. It is known for its leaning tower and is a listed building .

History and description

The parish church of Waitzendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1398 on the occasion of a mass foundation . It owes the name of St. Mary's Church for Eternal Early Mass to another Mass Foundation, which took place in 1421 . It was not consecrated to the Holy Trinity until 1749. In 1720 the church was elevated to a parish church. Until then, Waitzendorf was a branch of Pulkau and was looked after by the Schottenstift in Vienna.

The church was surrounded by its own local cemetery. It was inaugurated on October 1, 1679 by Abbot Johann X. In 1820 a new cemetery was laid out elsewhere.

The polygonal choir and the nave of the originally Gothic building, which was extended westward to the rectory between 1823 and 1831, are supported by buttresses from the 15th century. In 1803, a flat ceiling was built in place of the original Gothic ribbed vault. The arched windows were also installed at the beginning of the 19th century.

The tower connects to the church building on the north side of the choir and has a canopy with a lantern top. It was built by the people of Waitzendorf as supposedly the most beautiful church tower in the area, as they hoped to have their own pastor. However, this only happened when Count Christoph Schallenberg, as landlord, committed himself on June 28, 1719 to the establishment of a new parsonage and contributions to the maintenance of his own pastor.

Steeple

The 37 meter high steeple of the church was built between 1711 and 1712 or 1713 in the Baroque period in the style of the late Renaissance and originally had a double onion helmet. Since it was sloping, an additional foundation was built in 1932. The slope is currently around 1.1 degrees, but is still increasing.
