Schachen Racecourse

The Schachen horse racing track is a horse racing track in Aarau in Switzerland . It is located on Schwimmbadstrasse in Schachenquartier, about half a kilometer west of the old town, and extends partly to the area of ​​the neighboring municipality of Eppenberg-Wöschnau .

The track for gallop and trotting races has a length of 1200 meters. On the inside there are two diagonals for hunting races and additional obstacles for cross races. The Aarau racing club organizes four main racing days every year, as well as numerous other events. These include greyhound races and dog sports days . Also found here in July on the same day as the Maienzug the music festival Chrutwäje Openair instead.

In 1921 the first horse race was held on the parade ground of the infantry and cavalry barracks . The racing club was constituted two years later, and horse racing began in 1927. In 1947 the concrete grandstand was built, giving Aarau the first permanent horse racing track in Switzerland. In the same year the Swiss Grand Prix took place here for the first time. In 1995/96 the facility was extensively modernized at a cost of CHF 3.4 million.
