history

Phantassie House was built in the mid-18th century. The Countess of Aberdeen sold the property to George Rennie in 1785 . A short time later, he had a lime kiln built on the agricultural property . At the beginning of the 19th century the building was redesigned and expanded. George Rennie's younger brother, the eminent civil engineer John Rennie , completed an apprenticeship at the nearby Houston Mill . A baluster that Rennie designed for Waterloo Bridge in London is on display at the property.

The quarry stone building has a circumference of 17 m and is plastered with Harl. The unusual slate roof used on the south side is remarkable. 16 entry openings lead into the interior of the tower. 570 nest boxes are installed there.
