The Suhl Zoo is a zoo in the east of the city of Suhl in the Thuringian Forest , which specializes in keeping endangered European wild animals and domestic animals. It shows around 450 animals from 100 species.

history

The zoo was opened on October 7, 1969 and was originally limited to the keeping of native species. Since the 1990s, facilities have been expanded or rededicated to ensure animal welfare. The park's attractiveness was increased with the purchase of exotic animals, which are considered visitor favorites: in 2009, a walk-in Lori aviary was created instead of the abandoned bear keeping and in 2010 a facility for meerkats was opened. The budget security concept of the city of Suhl until 2023 provides for savings in future financial support for the zoo.

Livestock

The zoo assigns its stock to the following three areas:

Thuringian pets

Among the number of domestic forms of domestic animals, the zoo particularly tries to breed endangered breeds, including the Thuringian forest goat and the Rhön sheep .

Wild and Mammals

With lynx and elk or alpine ibex , some very endangered native or European wild animal species are represented.

Bird life

The endangered capercaillie breeds regularly in Suhl . There are also some species of owls and all-color loris in a walk-in enclosure .
