Pharo is an object-oriented , dynamic , reflexive and dynamically typed programming language and development environment . Pharo was split off from the Smalltalk implementation Squeak in 2008 and is open source .

history

The Squeak community made it very important to maintain compatibility with existing projects, especially Etoys. Regardless of backward compatibility, a group of Squeak developers wanted to push the technical development of Squeak more forward (for example by introducing traits ) and did this with the Pharo fork from Squeak version 3.9.

The project is developed and organized via the Pharo board. This is currently supported by employees of the French research institute Inria and volunteers. In the future, a consortium of companies, research institutions and private individuals will play a role in the development. These institutional and individual supporters of the project are affiliated as members of the Pharo consortium or the Pharo association.

Distribution / areas of application

Prominent open source users of Pharo are the Smalltalk web framework Seaside , the interactive geometry software Dr. Geo, the platform for software and data analysis Moose and the content management system Pier.

Pharo is used as a teaching language at universities and as a platform for research projects as well as in commercial desktop and web applications.
