Philemon "Phil" Masinga (born June 28, 1969 in Klerksdorp ; † January 13, 2019 ) was a South African football player .

Career

Masinga began his career at Jomo Cosmos (1990-1991). He played in the South African Major League for the Mamelodi Sundowns (1991-1994) before moving to England for Leeds United (32 games, 5 goals). After a short, less successful trip to Switzerland for FC St. Gallen (10 games, no goal), Masinga signed on with Salernitana Calcio in Italy , before he scored 24 times in 75 games for AS Bari between 1997 and 2001 . He then let his career with al-Wahda end.

In 1996 Masinga was on the Bafana Bafana team when it won the final of the African Cup of Nations . Masinga was also a member of the team when the South African team reached the final against Egypt at the 1998 African Cup of Nations. "Chippa", as he was affectionately known, scored the decisive goal in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup against the Congo , which secured Bafana Bafana participation in the World Cup in France .

Masinga represented South Africa 58 times in international matches and scored 19 goals. In 2003 he was nominated as one of the ambassadors for the South African World Cup application in 2010. South African fans were loyal to Masinga and he had a sizeable following as he is widely recognized as one of the best South African strikers of all time.

Masinga died in January 2019 at the age of 49 from complications from cancer diagnosed only the previous month.
