Philip Morris

Philip Morris (* 1835; † 1873) was a British tobacco trader and cigar importer. He was named after Philip Morris & Co., Ltd., founded in New York City in 1902 .

At the beginning of 1840 his German uncles and father, Joseph and Bernard Morris, had declared bankruptcy as cigar makers in Halfmoon Passage in Whitechapel. In 1847 the Morris family opened a shop on Bond Street in London . Around 1854 he started producing his own cigarettes. In 1870 he introduced the Philip Morris Cambridge and Philip Morris Oxford Blues brands . Morris died in 1873 and his widow Margaret and brother Leopold Morris continued to run the business.
