Philip Tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Philipsturm was a 36 m high observation tower in Hamburg's Planten un Blomen park . It was built in 1953 for the International Garden Show . The glass tower shone with fluorescent lamps of different light colors: white and warm tone. The tower was sponsored by Deutsche Philips GmbH, architect Bernhard Hermkes .

In 1949 the first fluorescent lamps were used in Hamburg. The pontoons on the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken built between 1950 and 1953 were the first public facilities to have a continuous band of fluorescent lamps.

Until the opening of the viewing platform of the nearby Heinrich Hertz Tower in 1968, the Philip Tower remained a Hamburg attraction. In 1971 it was demolished.

The Eulenburg , an artificial ruin with a viewing platform with a view of the zoological garden, was located on the site of the Philip Tower until 1935 .
