Phillip Coles

Phillip Walter Coles (born July 20, 1931 ) is an Australian sports official and former canoeist and lifeguard .

Sports career

Phillip Coles took part in three Summer Olympic Games as a canoeist. In 1960 in Rome he started in a kayak single over 1000 meters. He qualified for the semi-finals and was eliminated there in fourth. With the kayak relay he also reached the semifinals. In 1964 in Tokyo he was used in the kayak foursome. The boat was able to qualify for the final, but only finished ninth and last place there. In 1968 in Mexico City , Coles was again a member of the kayak foursome. This time the team was eliminated in the semi-finals. In his career as a canoeist he was a total of 25 times Australian champion.

In addition to canoeing, Phillip Coles was also active in lifeguarding . In this sport he was five times Australian champion.

Offices in sports associations

From 1973 Phillip worked for the Australian NOK, the Australian Olympic Committee . From 1985 to 1993 he was Secretary General. In 1981 he was a founding member of the association of oceanic NOKs, the Oceania National Olympic Committees .

In the following years Coles took on administrative functions for various sports. From 1991 to 1994 he was Vice President of the Australian Luge Association and from 1994 to 1999 General Secretary of the International Triathlon Union . He has been the patron of the Australian Triathlon Union since 1993. From 2005 to 2015 he was President of the Oceanic Taekwondo Association. Since 2008 he has been Vice President of World Taekwondo .

Activities within the IOC

In 1982 Phillip Coles was elected an IOC member. In 2012 his membership ended, after which he became an honorary member. During his time as a member he was active in various IOC commissions, B. in the Marketing Commission (1998–1999) and several times in the Radio and TV Commission (1983–1987, 1993–1999 and 2001–2012).
