Philonthus (Philonthus) decorus is a beetle from the family of the short-winged (Staphylinidae).

features

The beetles grow to be 10-14 mm long. The oval-shaped head, the pronotum and the elytra (elytra) are shiny greenish bronze. A double row of points runs across the pronotum. The wing covers have a dense, fine-grained puncture. The antennae are 11 elements. The legs are partly reddish. The black abdomen consists of 10 very mobile segments. When in danger, the beetles bend their abdomen upwards.

Occurrence

The beetle species is found in the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe and is relatively common. The species is also represented in the British Isles. To the east the distribution area extends at least as far as western Siberia .

Way of life

The beetles are active all year round. Eggs are usually laid from May to early September. The beetles live for a maximum of two years.

Forests and forest edges form their habitat. They prefer moist biotopes, mostly near water. They are usually found in the leaves, on moss, under stones or under tree trunks. The beetles are often found on carrion and rotting mushrooms. They prey on various small insects such as the pupae of the little frost moth ( Operophtera brumata ).
