Phineus (son of Belos)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phineus ( Greek Φινεύς ), the son of the Egyptian king Belos and the Anchinoë , was in Greek mythology the fiancé of his niece Andromeda , the daughter of the Ethiopian king Cepheus . However, the coast of Ethiopia was ravaged by the sea monster Ketos and the oracle of Ammon prophesied that Cepheus would have to sacrifice his daughter Andromeda to the monster in order to avert the disaster.

When Perseus found out about this, the following is said to have taken place: He killed the sea monster, thus saved the life of Andromeda and received her as a wife. Phineus then asked Perseus to return his betrothed. Perseus refused; a fight broke out in the course of which Perseus stuck the head of Medusa towards Phineus and so petrified him.
