Belos
Belos ( Latin Belus , ancient Greek Βῆλος ) - the Hellenized name for Ba'al - is king of Egypt in Greek mythology , the son of Poseidon and Libya . This in turn is the daughter of Epaphos and thereby granddaughter of Io and thus Belos is the brother of the Phoenician Agenor .
With Anchinoë , the daughter of the river god Neilos , Belos fathered the twins Aigyptus and Danaos , from whom a whole family of heroes descended. Also Cepheus and Phineus and a daughter, Thronia be specified as descendants of this couple. Phineus is also told that he was the uncle, brother or - as the son of Agenor - nephew of Belos. Belos is also considered the mythical founder of Babylon .
Its name is derived after Robert von Ranke-Graves from that of the Sumerian moon goddess Belili and is said to correspond to the Hebrew Baal of the Old Testament , as well as the Bel of the Apocrypha . It is more of a title (“Lord”, “King”, “God”) than an actual name.
