Phoebe Killdeer (* 1977 in Antibes , France ) is an Australian musician and the lead singer of the music groups Phoebe Killdeer & the Short Straws and Phoebe Killdeer & the Shift . She became known through the song Fade Out Lines , which became an international hit in 2014 in a version revised by the deep house producer The Avener .

life and career

Killdeer first gained notoriety when she worked with the French new wave cover band Nouvelle Vague . She worked on their second album Bande à part (2006) and went on tour with the band. She also appeared on the song Tonight by the group Basement Jaxx on their album Kish Kash (2003) and on the track Sunshine Lazy by Zero dB on the album Bongos, Bleeps and Basslines (2006).

After working with Nouvelle Vague, Killdeer pursued a solo career and founded the group The Short Straws , whose first album Weather's Coming was released in 2008. Killdeer's second album with the group, Innerquake , was released in 2011. Killdeer's musical style is influenced by Tom Waits and the rock and blues of the 1960s. Her voice has been compared to Peggy Lee and PJ Harvey .

A title of their second album, The Fade Out Line , was later revised by the French deep house producer The Avener (Tristan Casara) and released under the slightly changed title Fade Out Lines . The title was very successful in several countries and reached first place in Germany, Spain and Austria, third place in France and sixth in Italy.

Killdeer later moved to Berlin , where she started the new project Phoebe Killdeer & the Shift together with Thomas Mahmoud-Zahl and Ole Wulfers . Her first album, The Piano's Playing the Devil's Tune (2016), was created in collaboration with the Portuguese actress and singer Maria de Medeiros .
