Photon sieve

Photon sieve
Fresnel zone plate. Instead of the concentric rings, the photon sieve has many holes that are arranged on the rings.

A photon screen is a diffractive optical element which was originally developed for focusing X-rays . It consists of a flat carrier material with perforated diaphragms of different sizes , which are arranged similarly to the rings of a Fresnel zone plate . In contrast to this, the achievable resolution can be higher than the diameter of the smallest pinhole.

The amplitude is modulated by the size of each individual pinhole, the phase by the position. The field distribution in the focal plane is given by the linear superposition of the fields given by the individual pinhole diaphragms.
