PhpGedView is a free web application for displaying family trees and working with genealogical data according to the GEDCOM format. It was founded by John Finlay, who also leads the project.
The program is installed on a web server together with a GEDCOM file . An external genealogy program can be used to create, edit and upload the GEDCOM file. The data can also be entered and edited directly in PhpGedView by different users via the web interface. Up to version 3 PhpGedView worked in an index mode on files even without a database . From version 4 a database is required, whereby MySQL , PostgreSQL , Microsoft SQL Server or SQLite are available. Since PhpGedview version 4.2.2, at least PHP version 5.2 is required.
The webtrees fork has existed since 2010, and part of the PhpGedView development team has been responsible for its support.
Functions
Various display options are available for the genealogical data, including ancestral and family book diagrams, display as "hourglass", family tree or descendant tree .
Other functions are the life span display (parallel display of the "life bar" of several people) or the relationship calculation (results, for example, "Karl N. is Lisa M.'s great-uncle"). In addition to lists of persons, families, places and sources, the program also has a calendar function that lists the dates contained in it as a day, month or year view (eg "NN, today: 227th anniversary of death").
A full-text search and other search functions are available through which extensive data stocks can be narrowed down. This includes the Soundex search (search for names by pronunciation), which does not yet work reliably because the pronunciation of German umlauts is ignored.
"Collection container" and "task folder" as well as a "research assistant" complete the work options. Printouts can be optimized for the printer.
From version 4.0 a PunBB discussion forum is integrated as a module.
administration
The administrator has extensive configuration options in the categories: Gedcom Basics, Multimedia, Access and Privacy, Screen and Layout, Editing Options, User Options, Contact Information, Configuration of META Tags. He can u. a. Activate support for 22 languages or allow different themes.
The program offers a multi-level user administration for the functions:
- access (read all data)
- edit (add or change data)
- apply (confirm changes made by other users)
- Manage GEDCOM (reading the GEDCOM file)
Every registered user can put together his own GedView portal.
