webtrees is a free web application for displaying family trees and for processing and analyzing genealogical data in GEDCOM format. It is based on the server side in the PHP - web framework laravel and MySQL with client-side JavaScript parts by. From version 2.0.0 at least PHP 7.1 is required.

history

webtrees was spun off from PhpGedView in early 2010 . This second spin-off (after Genmod, which was split off at the end of 2005) is supported by the majority of active PhpGedView developers who no longer wanted to continue working on SourceForge . The cause were problems there when exporting encrypted software.

The architecture and functionality of versions 1.5–1.7 were still closely related to the predecessor PhpGedView and required PHP 5.3 or higher. Since the conversion of the entire application to the Laravel framework with version 2.0.0 in December 2019, at least PHP 7.1 is required.

Program description

The program is installed on a web server and allows users to jointly maintain genealogical data. GEDCOM files are used to exchange data with external genealogy programs (standard 5.5.1). The ancestor data is entered and processed by various users directly via the web interface, with a sophisticated rights system regulating access.

Various display options for the genealogical data are available, including ancestral and family book diagrams, display as "hourglass", family tree or descendant tree. Other functions are the life span display (parallel display of the "life bar" of several people) or the calculation of the relationship between two people. In addition to lists of people, families, places and sources, the program also has a calendar function that lists the dates it contains as a day, month or year view. There is a full text search as well as other search functions that can be used to narrow down extensive databases. This includes the Soundex search (search for names by pronunciation).

In order to be able to add further functions not included in the standard, Webtrees can be extended with the help of a flexible module system.

The administrator has extensive configuration options for displaying the information and for managing rights. The user can choose between different views (English "themes"), choose his language for the user interface and configure his start portal.
