Phuo

The Phuo (also: Pougouli or Pwa) are an ethnic group from the West African state of Burkina Faso . The approximately 10,000 Phuo live in the provinces of Ioba , Bougouriba and Tuy .

Phuo society is divided into seven large clan groups, each divided into three to nine exogamic patric lans. Presumably the Phuo crossed the Mouhoun in the middle of the 18th century and settled the area around Dissin , Nakar, Dano and Ouorpon.

Phuie , the Phuo language, belongs to the western branch of the Gurunsi languages .
