( Meigen , 1818)

Phylidorea ferruginea is a two-winged bird from the family of wilts (Limoniidae).

features

The fly has a body length of about 9 millimeters. It is yellow-brown in color, has a light gray forehead and a shiny, single-colored mesonotum . The wings are tinted yellow and unspotted. The wing veins r2 + 3 and m1 + 2 are petiolate, the discoidal cell is closed. The legs are yellow-brown and have a dark spot on the knees. The abdomen is orange-brown, in the male segments 9 and 10 are black.

The larva of the species has the typical shape of a larva of the Tipuloidea with an elongated, worm-shaped shape and a small hemicephalic head capsule that can be retracted into the trunk. The stigma field at the end of the body is surrounded by four lobe-like appendages (praises), which are rounded at the end. The ventral pair of lobes is much longer than the lateral. The tip (apex) of the lateral lobes has a tuft of very long hair. The species is recognizable from other species of the genus by the elongated, darkly pigmented sclerites of the lobes, which abut at their base. The sclerites of the lateral lobes are very narrow.

Way of life and distribution

The larvae of Phylidorea ferruginea live in soils saturated with water, in the bank zone of standing and flowing waters, in headwaters, bogs and in soils of wet and swamp forests. Adults mainly fly in summer, with a maximum in July and August.

The species is distributed throughout most of Europe, including Central Europe. It occurs in the south as far as the Mediterranean region (Greece, Spain, Israel) and in the north as far as Scandinavia. In the east, its range includes Turkey, most of Russia and Mongolia.
