Piéla is both a municipality ( French commune rurale ) and a department encompassing the same area in the West African state of Burkina Faso , in the region of Est and the province of Gnagna . The municipality has 55,672 inhabitants in 36 villages and five sectors of the main town.

The region on the edge of the Sahel zone is supported by several German organizations. The Förderverein Piéla-Bilanga eV from Ochsenhausen has financed more than 20 primary schools in the last 34 years, built the water supply for the town of Piéla, financed the Protestant primary school and the Lycée (grammar school) Bethlehem. The association is also involved in work with the disabled and in raising awareness against female genital mutilation.

The association BAREKA from Untergruppenbach finances (also with grants from the BMZ) drinking water wells in the villages and in agricultural projects. (Organic sesame)

Bad Münstereifel is a twin town of Piéla. The community receives so-called help for self-help from there. The Piéla-Bad Münstereifel partnership has built 91 wells in the municipality of Piéla and in the neighboring municipalities over the past 20 years. In 1998 the partnership built the girls' dormitory "Torima" to offer orphans and girls from very poor families a home and to enable them to attend school. The other goals are to promote vocational training by setting up a training center for skilled trades and to raise awareness of the issues of family planning.
