Piața Avram Iancu ( German  Avram-Iancu-Platz ) is located in the I. District Centru of Arad in Romania and is the historically most important square in the city.

Surname

The Avram Iancu Square owes its name to the Romanian revolutionary Avram Iancu , one of the leaders of the Romanian Revolution of 1848 . This fought with Austrian support against the Hungarian anti-Habsburg uprising .

history

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Avram Iancu Square was the city's economic and political center. The old town hall , which was built in 1704, was at number 16 .

Here the government decision, Arad was founded in 1834 to free royal town of the Emperor to raise, in the presence of Franz Joseph I. announced. The festivities that followed, known as the Arad Festival , lasted twelve days, from August 17th to 28th.

The People's Assembly also took place here in October 1918, which preceded the Grand National Assembly of Alba Iulia on December 1, 1918, at which the unification of Transylvania with Romania was decided.

In the middle of the square is the monument of the unknown soldier , which was erected in 1960 in honor of the heroes in the liberation struggle of Transylvania by the German-Hungarian troops during the Second World War .

The square is lined with two-story baroque style houses. The Ioan Slavici Classical Theater , built in 1874, is at the confluence of the Bulevardul Revoluţiei with Avram Iancu Square . In the adjacent Strada Preparandiei is the building in which the first Romanian educational institution in Transylvania was founded in 1812.

In September 2011, a call for tenders was made to redesign Avram Iancu Square. The square is to be provided with a two-story, underground parking garage for around 500–600 parking spaces and a pedestrian underpass. A pyramid-shaped virtual library is also being planned.
