Piast Tower (Opole)
The Piastenturm is a historical tower on the Oder island Pascheke south of the old town of Opole . In the vernacular it was also known as "Proskes asparagus".
history
The Piast was the end of the 13th century under the Piast Opole Casimir I built. Therefore, the tower is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Poland. The tower was actually built in the Gothic style, with a cone-shaped helmet. The crowning of the spire has often changed. In 1880 it was a granite top, from 1906 a conical tower roof and from 1934 a zinc cone. In 1957 an 11 meter high spire was added to the Piast Tower. The Piast Tower was originally part of the Piast Castle , which was demolished in 1931. In place of the Piast Castle, a modern government building was built for the Opole administrative district from 1932 to 1936 . The tower was included in the complex and redesigned. Today the building is the seat of the Voivodeship Administration of the Opole Voivodeship .
The round brick building has a three meter thick masonry and is 42 meters high, with the spire even 51 meters. On top of it there is a wind vane with the Piast eagle.
The 162 steps in the Piast Tower lead to the viewing platform, which is open to tourists in summer. After a renovation, a multimedia presentation with several history stations was installed inside the tower.
