Nano is a free text editor for Linux and Unix systems as well as for Windows . It is unlike other applications for the command line - such as vi - easy to use, which is why it is popular with beginners. The writing application is a GNU replica of the text editor Pico , which is used in Pine , an e-mail program and newsreader . Nano is written in C and uses the ncurses library.

Its first release in 1999 was called TIP - which stood for ' TIP isn't Pico ' ( recursive acronym ).

Functions

Nano is not one of the most powerful text editors, but it does support all the basic functions: edit, cut, copy, paste, scroll, find and replace. It also offers syntax highlighting for common languages. A continuous undo function has been added in version 2.4.0, and a macro facility has also been available since 2.9.0 .

It is basically operated using the keyboard. Configurable key combinations are available to use functions such as save and cut .
