He was unionized and joined the Confédération générale du travail . For these he was later responsible as secretary for the railway workers, the chemical industry and metal processing. In 1939 he also joined the Parti communiste français and joined the Resistance the following year after the occupation of France by the Wehrmacht . Political career

A year after the liberation of France in 1945, Arraut became mayor of the southern French city of Sète. He exercised this until 1948 and again from 1959 to 1973. Also in 1945 he succeeded in entering the General Council of the Hérault department . In the parliamentary elections in 1967 he stood for the communists in the third constituency of the department for election. In the first round he received the most votes with 35.5 percent. In the second round he benefited from the withdrawal of the socialist candidate and was able to prevail with 57.7 percent. Due to the events of May 1968 , a new parliamentary election took place after only one year. Despite the socialist's renewed withdrawal, Arraut failed to re-elect with 46.4 percent. In the 1973 parliamentary elections, however, he decided to run again and was re-elected MP in the second round with almost 56 percent. In 1978 he decided against running again and was not politically active until his death in 1983.
