Pierre Gallisard (* in the 15th or 16th century; † 1577 in Arles ), also Gallisart or Latinized Petrus Gallisardus, was a French author and theologian . He was friar of the Dominican convent in Arles and a doctor of theology. Here he worked as a schoolmaster and wrote several Bible commentaries as well as a translation of Augustine De doctrina christiana from Latin into French. He became better known for his prosaic work Pulicis Encomium Physica Ratione Tractatum (Praise of the Flea) published by Jean de Tournes, Lyon in 1550. The previously published Encomium pulicis (Ferrara? 1519) by Caelio Calcagnini served as a model . The Gallisards work is considered early humanistic work of flea literature .
