Pierre Pansu (born July 13, 1959 in Lyon ) is a French mathematician who deals with differential geometry.

Pansu won the silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1976 and studied at the École normal supérieure (ENS) from 1977 to 1981 (Agrégation 1979). He received his doctorate in 1982 at the University of Paris VII with Marcel Berger (Thèse de 3eme Cycle, Geometry du groupe de Heisenberg ) with the second part of the French doctorate (Thèse d'Etat) in 1987. From 1983 he was a researcher at the CNRS (Chargé de Recherches ) and has been a professor at the Paris-South University in Orsay since 1990 . He was also a professor at the ENS from 2009 to 2011.

He worked with Michail Leonidowitsch Gromow , whose influential book on metric structures on Riemannian and non-Riemannian spaces he published with Jacques Lafontaine in 1981 (called Kleines greenes Buch ). Pansu also belonged to the mathematicians group Arthur Besse .

In 1991 he received the Prix opponent of the Académie des Sciences .

Cornelia Druţu (lecturer at Oxford, winner of the Whitehead Prize) is one of his PhD students .
