Pierre Vimont (born June 15, 1949 ) is a French diplomat. On 25 October 2010 he was appointed Executive Secretary General of the European External Action Service by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton . He was previously the French ambassador to Washington, DC since 2007

Life

After studying law, Pierre Vimont attended the Institut d'Etudes Politiques ( Sciences Po ) in Paris. In 1977 he graduated from the École nationale d'administration (ENA). He then began a diplomatic career in the French Foreign Ministry .

Pierre Vimont holds the French National Order of Merit (Ordre National du Mérite).

  • 1978–1981: First Secretary of the French Embassy in London
  • 1981–1985: Member of the press department of the French Foreign Ministry in Paris
  • 1985–1986: Employee at the EastWest Institute in New York
  • 1986–1990: Second advisor in the Permanent Representation of France to the European Community in Brussels
  • 1990–1993: Head of Cabinet of the Minister for European Affairs, Paris
  • 1993–1996: Head of Scientific, Technical and Educational Cooperation in the French Foreign Ministry, Paris
  • 1996–1997: Director General for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paris
  • 1997–1999: Director for European Cooperation, Paris
  • 1999–2002: Ambassador, Permanent Representative of France to the European Union in Brussels
  • 2002–2007: Head of Cabinet of the French Minister for Foreign Affairs
  • 2007–2010: French Ambassador to the United States of America, Washington
  • 2010–2015: Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Brussels
