Pigi Artemidos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

During the construction of the national road from Athens to Thessaloniki , a settlement from the Bronze Age was discovered. The excavations on the Pigi Artemidos ( Greek Πηγή Αρτέμιδος , source of Artemis' ) took place from July to December 2009. The area of the excavations is around 1000 m², they were dug to a depth of 2.50 meters. The excavation sites along the ancient road on the coast ( source of Athene , Valtos Leptokaryas ) and on the pass road from Petra ( Spathes ) are of particular importance because they show the change in the living conditions of the inhabitants of that time from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age. The place was still used in the classical period , possibly as a farm. There are also references to viticulture in the Roman period .

location

The settlement was at the foot of the lower Olympus, in the middle between the castle of Platamonas and the source of Athena, west of the Athens - Thessaloniki highway at a height of 90 meters.

necropolis

In a framed stone grave mound (tumulus) with ten meters in diameter nine graves and other bones were found. Another grave lies outside the tumulus and cannot be precisely dated. The graves within the burial site are arranged around a centrally located grave. A special feature of the burial culture of this settlement is that adolescents were buried in simple pits; the graves of the adults are bordered with stone slabs and some have been marked with stones.

Finds

The graves contained only a few grave goods. They mostly consisted of clay pots and personal belongings. Three knives, a bracelet, needles and a spiral earring were found; all of these finds were made of bronze. Among the grave goods was a clay pot in the Mycenaean style . Stone arrowheads and clay weights were also found, which were used for weaving. The excavations brought the remains of a wall and a building (4.65 m by 2.75 m by 0.65 m) to light.

study

The study by P. Tritsaroli and S. Koulidou examines the interaction of the inhabitants of the Pigi Artemidos with their environment and the different burial cultures of the 2nd millennium BC. Chr.

Despite adverse conditions, such as the small number of skeletons examined, their poor state of preservation and the damage to the bones during the excavations, the human remains were examined visually ( macroscopically ) and with the help of X-ray machines. The age was determined by assessing the development of the teeth and measuring certain bones (including the thighs and bones of the arms).

The skeletons and teeth examined showed signs of deprivation during growth and development. In addition to bone injuries, people had suffered from tooth decay, tartar, tooth loss and arthritis. Joint diseases were common and affected the spine ( Schmorl nodules ), knees and feet and indicate a lively lifestyle.

A comparison with nearby necropolises from the late Bronze Age, such as Spathes, shows different forms of burial and a changing burial culture.
