Pigi Athinas

The Pigi Athinas ( Greek Πηγή Αθηνάς , source of Athena ' ) is an archaeological excavation site at the eastern foot of Mount Olympus (lower Olympus) near the village of Platamonas .

history

Grave goods, source of Athena

The presence of humans has been around since the first half of the 7th millennium BC. BC (early Neolithic period ) known. During the Middle Neolithic Period, around 5600 to 4500 BC. The excavations

The excavation work began in 2001 and was initially carried out until 2003. The excavations were resumed in April 2008 and ended in early 2011. The excavation site is located under the route of the PATHE motorway (Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki-Evzoni), the excavations were financed by the construction company. The finds range from the Neolithic to the Post- Byzantine period (after 1453).

Burial place

The burial mounds date from 1620 to 1500 BC. Chr .; the tumuli were circular or elliptical and consisted of large pebbles that probably came from the nearby river. All of the mounds have a central tomb in the middle that faces west to east. With the exception of a burial mound, under which only one deceased was buried, there are other graves around the central grave. The middle grave is larger and deeper than the other graves. The pits were lined with stone and have a depth of up to 1.30 meters. The skeletons of 17 people were found who had died between the ages of 20 and 50; mainly clay pots were found as grave goods.

Roman burial place

16 people were buried there, and skeletons of 12 adults and four children were discovered. The cemetery is in the immediate vicinity of a Roman farmhouse and was laid out in the first half of the 4th century AD. The deceased were buried in simple pits. The graves were not looted and contained many grave goods.

An aqueduct from the time of the Ottoman rule was found in the vicinity of the necropolis.

The settlement belonging to the Neolithic necropolis has not yet been located.
