Axel Straube

Axel Straube (born September 29, 1942 in Wettin ; † May 15, 2017 ) was a German basketball player and coach.

career

As a member of one of the first years, Straube attended the children's and youth sports school in Halle. In the youth of SC Chemie Halle , he played basketball alongside Volkhard Uhlig, among others . In the youth field and later with the Halles men's team, Straube won the GDR championship several times. He also played in European Cups. As a national player, he was used in 40 international matches, in 1963 and 1965 he took part in the European Championship finals with the selection of the German Basketball Association of the GDR (DBV) and came in sixth in 1963. In 1966 he was awarded the title of "Master of Sports" from the German Democratic Republic.

After graduating from high school in 1961, he studied sports science at the Martin Luther University in Halle . Due to a knee injury, he ended his playing career, in 1965, at the age of 23, he took up the position of coach with the men of SC Chemie Halle, which became German champions under his direction. In addition, he later also worked as an assistant coach for the national team and became the managing director of SG KPV 69 Halle. An illness forced him to discontinue his coaching career.

In 1989 he published the book Basketball - Instructions for the trainer , from 1990 Straube was involved in trainer training and further education, he was also involved in reorganizing and further developing the basketball structures in Saxony-Anhalt after the fall of the Wall.
