description

Pilosocereus machrisii grows shrubby, branches only at the base and reaches heights of 0.4 to 3.5 meters. The upright, smooth, dark green to blue-green, somewhat gray or glaucoma shoots are slightly woody and have a diameter of 3.2 to 9 centimeters. There are 8 to 15 ribs. The thorns, which are translucent when young, are reddish, brownish or golden in color. Of the 3 to 8 ascending, 1.5 to 4 centimeters long central spines, the longest is bent on old areoles . The 9 to 24 radial spines are 3 to 25 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is very distinct and includes three or more ribs. From the areoles there arise gray, 2 to 3 centimeters long hair.

The funnel-shaped flowers are white with reddish tips. They are 3 to 8 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 3 to 6 centimeters. The depressed spherical fruits have a diameter of 2 to 3.5 centimeters, tear on the side and contain a white pulp. The seeds contained therein are humped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus machrisii is distributed in central and western Brazil and in eastern Paraguay on quartzitic sandstone rocks at altitudes of 150 to 1200 meters.

The first description as Cephalocereus machrisii was published in 1957 by Elmer Yale Dawson (1918-1966). Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Pilosocereus in 1960 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
