biography

Pinarayi Vijayan was born in a small village in what was then British India. He comes from a modest background. His father worked as a toddy-tapper , meaning he made a living tapping sugar palm juice , which is used to make palm wine . He attended school in his home district and then graduated from Brennen College , Thalassery . In his youth he came into contact with Marxist ideas and the communist movement, which is traditionally strong in Kerala (1957-1959 there was the first communist-led government in an Indian state), and finally joined the Communist Party of India ( Marxist) (CPM). In 1964 he was elected General Secretary of the Kerala Students' Federation in Kannur District. Then he rose in the local party hierarchy of the CPM in Kannur. In parliamentary elections in Kerala he was elected a total of four times as a member of the CPM in the parliament of Kerala (1970, 1977, 1991 and 1996; the first three in the constituency of Koothuparambu , the last in the constituency of Payyannur ). During the time of the state of emergency in India 1975–1977 , he was, like many other politicians in opposition to the policies of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi , imprisoned for many months. In the following two decades he was active as a functionary of the CPM in Kerala and gradually rose in the party hierarchy. After the death of the previous CPM General Secretary in Kerala, Chadayan Govindan, Vijayan took over this office in 1998 and held it (with multiple re-elections) until 2012.

In the government of the Chief Minister on Kerala EK Nayanar (1996-2001) Vijayan held the office of Minister for Electricity and Energy from 1996-1998. Pinarayi Vijayan was sworn in as Chief Minister of Kerala on May 25, 2016 after the Left Democratic Front, an alliance of the CMP and other left parties, won the Kerala general election in 2016.

Pinarayi is married and has two children with his wife Kamala, Veena and Vivek.
