Pinguicula gigantea is a carnivorous plant from the genus of the fatty herbs ( Pinguicula ) in the section Agnata . It was firstdescribedby Hans Luhrs in 1996and, with a diameter of up to 30 centimeters, is by far the largest species of the genus.

description

Pinguicula gigantea is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows in a native rosette . The root system consists of numerous thread-like adventitious roots .

The elongated-round to inverted-egg-shaped, rounded to blunt leaves at the end of the leaf are semi-upright and - rarely in the genus - are occupied on both sides with glands. Towards winter the plant forms a winter rosette of six to nine leaves, the leaves then reach a length between 35 and 60 millimeters and 24 to 38 millimeters wide.

The leaves of the summer rosette reach a length between 60 and 145, rarely up to 165 millimeters and 40 to 70, rarely up to 80 millimeters in width. On the surface, the leaves are sticky from the secretions they use to catch small insects and, as soon as prey is obtained, digested by enzymes .

The one to four flower stalks formed between January and April are 15 to 19 centimeters long and have a single terminal flower. The upper sepal is lobed in three parts, the lobes are egg-shaped, 3 to 4 millimeters long and just as wide. The lower sepal is in two parts, the lobes are ovate to elliptically lanceolate, 2.5 to 3 millimeters long and 2 millimeters wide. The crown is light to dark purple, the upper petal is lobed in two parts, the lower in three parts.

distribution

The species is found exclusively in full sun on steep slopes near San Bartholomé Ayautla in Oaxaca , Mexico, at altitudes between 500 and 800 meters. There it grows together with Tillandsia streptophylla and dragon tree agaves ( Agave attenuata ).
