Pingyunnan stele by Yuan Shizu

The Pingyunnan Stele of Yuan Shizu ( Kublai Khan ) ( Chinese  元世祖平云南碑 , Pinyin Yuán Shìzǔ Píngyúnnán at ) is a stele from the time of the Mongol dynasty in the city of Dali in Cangshan Mountains in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan .

It was built in 1307 under Yuan Chengzong , is 4.44 m high and 1.65 m wide. It consists of two large granite blocks that stand on the back of a stone turtle, hence the name of the turtle stele. It reports on the conquest of Yunnan by the emperor of the Mongol dynasty Kublai Khan (Yuan Shizu).

The inscription consists of 1300 characters, of which about 1,000 are still legible.

The stele has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (5-464) since 2001 .
