Pinta is a human skin disease found in Mexico, Central and South America. It is caused by infection with Treponema pallidum carateum and belongs to the group of tropical treponematoses . In the course of the disease, depigmented or hypopigmented areas of skin known as leukoderma may develop .

The disease is mainly transmitted through direct skin contact. The incubation period is between one and three weeks. Pinta is mostly chronic and can last for years. Therapy is usually with benzylpenicillin . Diagnosis is carried out microscopically or serologically .
