Pitcullo Castle , also Pitcullo House , is a tower house near the Scottish village of Dairsie in the Council Area Fife . In 1973 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Tower House is believed to date from the late 16th century. The initials "DB" can be read above the entrance portal. This could point to David Balfour of Petcullo , who died in 1514 at the latest. During the 17th century the building was expanded. Pitcullo Castle was in ruins in the 20th century. In 1968 it was restored as a residential building. The later extension was canceled.

Pitcullo Castle is isolated around 1.3 km north of Dairsie and southwest of Balmullo . The three-story Tower House has an L-shaped floor plan. The expansion in the 17th century meanwhile resulted in a U-shaped floor plan. Its masonry is made of quarry stone . A stair tower protrudes from the inner corner . Its closure was revised in the course of the 18th century and integrated into the building structure with a sloping roof. Part of the residential tower is built with a vault.
