The Place Hamilius , usually shortened to Hamilius or Place Émile Hamilius , is a central public square in Luxembourg City . It is considered one of the most important squares in the city and was named after the city's long-time mayor, Émile Hamilius .

Location and function

The square is bordered to the west by the extension of the Adolphe Bridge , Boulevard Royal, to the south by Avenue Monterey and to the east by Rue Aldringen. In the north, the 33-meter-high, 9-story skyscraper Center Émile Hamilius formed the end of the building. In the east, the monumental post office building by the architect Sosthène Weis determines the character, in the south there has been a six-story main administration building of the BNP Paribas bank since 1967 , for which the architects René Mailliet and Pierre Reuter are responsible. To the west there are two other bank buildings on Boulevard Royal: Kredietbank SA Luxembourgeoise on the corner of Avenue Monterey , and La Luxembourgoise to the north .

This design of the square was decided in 1974 by the city administration, which commissioned the architects René Schmit , André Hagen and Jean Ewert with the design. The Aldrenger Schoul building, which had previously been located there since 1881 , was demolished. The construction of all buildings is made of stone, which corresponds to the character of the city. In front of the city administration building stood the Nana statue Femme Bleue by Niki de Saint-Phalle , which was dismantled in mid-November 2013 for future construction work.

The Place Hamilius was served by many urban bus lines that crossed it diagonally in 3 × 2 lanes and had their stop here in the center of the square. Motorized individual traffic was not permitted on the square. Until 2015, one level below was a pedestrian underpass with a shopping arcade for seven small shops. This underpass connected various staircases, which made it possible to cross the main traffic axes safely . The mall had been orphaned for years; The hip-hop scene with its breakdancers had established itself here since the early 1980s . In mid-October 2012, various artists were invited to design the barren concrete walls. This action was part of the "Galerie d'Art Urbain provisoire" project, which was supposed to help prevent the increasing ghettoization before the demolition of the shopping mall and the Hamilius Center, which had already been decided for 2015, should take place.

In 2015, extensive renovation work began on the square to make it more attractive. The architect Norman Foster is in charge . The surrounding buildings were demolished by the end of 2015. A large new complex is under construction with a department store, supermarket, apartments, restaurant, office space and parking spaces. The bus station has not been in operation since June 2015 and is to give way to a trapezoidal public square. This is possible because the bus transport was fundamentally reorganized. The construction work should be completed by 2018.
