The Place d'Armes is a square in the city of Québec . It is located in the La Cité-Limoilou arrondissement , in the upper part of the old town ( Vieux-Québec ).

description

The square has the shape of a trapezoid and is around 5000 m² in size. It is limited to the north by Rue Sainte-Anne, to the east by Rue du Fort, to the south by Rue Saint-Louis and to the west by Rue du Trésor. There are several significant buildings on the edge of the square, including the Château Frontenac to the south and the former Palace of Justice (now Treasury) and the Anglican Cathedral of Holy Trinity to the west.

In the middle of the park-like square is the Monument de la Foi (Faith Monument ). It was unveiled in 1916 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the Franciscan Order of Récollet . The 12 meter high monument is made of granite and is the work of Abbot Adolphe Garneau. A young woman is depicted as a symbol of the Christian faith.

history

Charles Jacques Huault de Montmagny , Governor General of New France , had the square built between 1640 and 1648 near Fort Saint-Louis . There were drilling stationed in the city and soldiers were parades held. After the conquest of Québec in 1759, British troops used the space for the same purposes, but often switched to other, more spacious locations. After the completion of the Québec Citadel in 1832, the Place d'Armes lost its military function. In 1865 it was converted into a public park . Other names used to be common for the square: Grande Place (17th century), Place du Fort (1683), Place du Château (1692), Grande Parade (1815). The British also called the square the ring .
