Planet is a server-side feed reader for aggregator services that is used to summarize various news sources on websites. The program is free software and was originally developed in 2004 for aggregator services of the Linux distribution Debian and the desktop environment Gnome , which summarized the blogs of the developers on one website.

In a figurative sense, the term is generally used for websites that use a feed aggregator to combine various news sources, especially blogs.

description

The program was written in the Python programming language . It requires version 2.2 of this language as a prerequisite and, according to the provider, is under the same license.

The program uses the Universal Feed Parser developed by Mark Pilgrim to understand Web-Feed ſ in the formats RSS and Atom as well as the Resource Description Framework (RDF). The results are output as static files using the htmltmpl engine.

Alternative programs that work in a similar way are Feedjack , Venus , Moonmoon, and Plagger .

A planet can also be created with the help of WordPress together with the FeedWordPress plugin.
