Platform for change, unity and democracy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Platform for Change, Unity and Democracy , abbreviated as SCUD ( English Platform for Change, Unity and Democracy , French Socle pour le Changement, l'Unité et la Démocratie ) is a Chadian rebel group that was founded in October 2005 by former members of the Chadian armed forces which deserted and united under the founders and leaders, the 30-year-old Yaya Dillo Djérou and his brother.

The main objective of the group is to overthrow the government of the current president and uncle of Djérou and his brother, Idriss Déby . The SCUD has bases in eastern Chad and in the Darfur region of Sudan . In December 2005, the SCUD and members of the Collection for Democracy and Freedom attacked Chadian troops stationed in Adre . This triggered the Chadian-Sudanese conflict.

Massimo Giovanola from Cooperazione Internazionale says: "Déby is said to have got to the point of offering the rebels 400 million CFA francs (about € 600,000) to put down their arms ... but it's not a question of money. Déby has acquired too much power in recent years and the Zaghawa have decided to get rid of him. "
