Platystoma seminationis is a relatively common species fromthe broad-mouthed fly family (Platystomatidae). The species is widespread in Central Europe, but inconspicuous. The dark wings with light window spots are characteristic.
The adults are often found at the edges of forests or hedges, especially on vegetation that is up to knee high. Eating happily on blooming cypress spurge and on blooming umbelliferous plants with their openly presented nectar. So on the blooming double umbels of sweet umbels ( myrrhis ) and ground elder ; but allegedly also on feces. The larvae feed on fungi and fungus-infested plant roots in the soil. The flies have a highly developed courtship ritual that has so far hardly been explored, in which males and females literally kiss each other after an approach dance.
