Playa Encuentro
The Playa Encuentro is a 1.6-kilometer stretch of beach between Cabarete and Sosua on the north coast of the Dominican Republic . The beach can only be reached via a dirt road near the 'Coconut Palms' housing estate.
Surfing at Playa Encuentro
Although Cabarete is a stronghold for windsurfers and kiters due to the excellent wind conditions, the place and especially Playa Encuentro is becoming more and more popular with the surfing community from all over the world.
Surf conditions
Due to the good location on the Atlantic north coast there is a surfable "swell" all year round, although it is rather small in summer. The best swells can be found at Encuentro from November to February. During this time, the prevailing strong wind weakens and thus enables the best conditions for surfing. Depending on your talent and surfing experience, you can put your skills to the test on three different breaks. The surfers at the Encuentro differentiate between the "Encuentro Left Break", "Encuentro Right Break" and the "Encuentro Beach Break" (located between the left and the right break). All three waves are typical "reef breaks" and break over a coral reef. The central wave is particularly recommended for beginners, as this represents the lowest risk of injury in the event of a "wipe out". Characteristic of the right wave at the Encuentro is that it breaks into a small bay and thus also creates a longer wave; this wave is also surfed in competitions. Exactly on the opposite side is the left shaft, which is also called "Coco Pipe". The particularly fast and steep wave breaks over a very shallow reef and, due to its nature, can sometimes "throw a barrel".
There are several possibilities to find out the "Forecast" forecasts. On the one hand, the local surf shops like the "No Work Team Surf-Shop Cabarete" or the "Rata Surf-Shop Cabarete" offer a wind and wave report every day and advise anyone who cannot cope with the forecasts. On the other hand, experienced surfers have the opportunity to find out online which conditions will be found at "Playa Encuentro" in the next few days.
Competitions
Another highlight on the beach section "Encuentro Playa" are the surf competitions that take place there every year, with two competitions being particularly popular with the public. In 2002 the "OP Latin Pro" were held at Playa Encuentro. The competition brought together over 100 professional surfers from Latin America to determine the best among them in five categories (Open Surf, Junior Surf, Bodyboard, Longboard and Female Surf). Probably the largest and most popular competition by far is the " Master of the Ocean ", a triathlon competition consisting of the three disciplines windsurfing-kitesurfing-surfing, the latter being held at Playa Encuentro.
