In Playpen it was the temporary largest child pornography Web page in the so-called darknet . It was created in August 2014 by Steven W. Chase. After investigations by the FBI , the site was closed in February 2015 - with more than 215,000 users and 23,000 child pornographic images and videos.

With more than 215,000 users and 23,000 child pornographic images, Playpen is one of the world's largest child porn platforms.

While the FBI said they knew about the site from the start, they were initially unable to determine the server locations or operators. The cause of the problems was the fact that the people behind Playpen had operated the website as a so-called hidden service in the Tor network. Only through a mishap by Chase in December 2014, which revealed the IP address of Playpen, the investigative authorities were finally able to track down the servers and the site operators. The site was closed in February 2015.

As a result of the investigation, the site's creator, Steven W. Chase, was sentenced to 30 years in prison in May 2017. His two co-defendants, site administrators Michael Fluckinger and David Browning, were sentenced to 20-year prison terms back in February 2017 after pleading guilty.

According to the FBI and Europol , around 900 people were arrested worldwide, including just under 370 in Europe. 296 sexually abused children have been identified or saved.
