Isla Plaza Sur with opuntia and red colored sesuvium |
Plaza Sur is one of the Galápagos Islands . The approximately twelve hectare island is located 500 meters off the east coast of Santa Cruz and is inhabited by sea lions, marine iguanas, land iguanas and numerous species of birds. Together with the Plaza Norte opposite, it forms the crater rim of a volcano that rises above sea level. The caldera practically forms a harbor basin for excursion boats. There is a circular hiking trail on the island. In addition to opuntia , the island is populated by ground-covering plants of the genus Sesuvium , which turn intense red in the dry season.
