Pli selon pli

Pli selon pli is a composition by the French composer Pierre Boulez for soprano and orchestra . It bears the subtitle Portrait de Mallarmé and is composed on the text of three sonnets by the French poet Stéphane Mallarmé .

The piece of music lasts over an hour, making it one of Boulez's longest works. The composition was started in 1957 and by 1990 the work received various revisions. The world premiere took place in Cologne in 1960 with the composer at the conductor's desk. A modified version was performed again in 1962 at the Donaueschinger Musiktage under the direction of the composer.

The composition consists of the following 5 parts:

  1. Don - based on the text of the poem Don du poème
  2. Improvisation sur Mallarmé I - based on the text of the sonnet «Le vierge, le vivace et le bel aujourd'hui ...»
  3. Improvisation sur Mallarmé II - on the text of the sonnet "Une dentelle s'abolit ..."
  4. Improvisation sur Mallarmé III - on the text of the sonnet "A la nue accablante tu ..."
  5. Tombeau - on the text of the sonnet of the same name
