Pocas Pascoal

Pocas Pascoal , actually Maria Esperança Pascoal , (* 1963 in Luanda , Portuguese-Angola ) is an Angolan film director.

Pascoal was born in 1963 in the capital Luanda of the Portuguese colony Angola. At the age of 16 she fled the Angolan civil war to Lisbon, but returned two years later to work as Angola's first camerawoman. In 1986 she moved to France to study directing at the Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma Français . Since 2002 she has been part of an artist group called Cité Internationale des Arts.

In 1998 Pascoal published her first short film Pour nous , followed by two documentaries Mémoires d'enfance (2000) and There is always somebody who loves you (2004) as well as another short film Demain sera différent (2008). In 2011 she produced her first feature film: Por aqui tudo bem , in which she describes her “exile” in Portugal in an autobiographical manner . For this film she received various prizes, including the Best Film at the Los Angeles International Film Festival in 2012 and the European Union Prize at FESPACO 2013.
