Podwein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Podwein belonged to the oldest noble families of Carniola . They are documented from the beginning of the 14th century. Valvasor puts them in the line of the knighthood , which were already extinguished in his time with "names and tribe".

Origin and headquarters

So far it is only known that the Podwein ministers were the Counts of Ortenburg . Her ancestral seat Podwein, first mentioned in 1311, was in Upper Carniola near Radmannsdorf (Slov. Radovljica ). According to Valvaor, Herbert von Podwein was the owner of the castle in 1331. From 1351 to 1396 it belonged to Thomas von Podwein. He was followed by Sebald von Podwein, who died soon after when he broke into a bridge with his horse in 1397, fell into the water and drowned. Sebald was the last male descendant of this sex. Diemuth, the daughter of Thomas von Podwein and wife of Wilhelm II von Lamberg (approx. 1368) was now the sole heir. On June 15, 1399, Friedrich Graf von Ortenburg transferred the fiefs of Thomas von Podwein and Wilhelm II von Lamberg to his son Georg I von Lamberg.

Valvasor: Podwein Castle (1679)

Valvasor writes the following about Podwein (excerpt):

“The Podwein Castle, in Crainerian Podvine, is located in Ober-Crain, six miles from Laybach and half a mile from the town of Rattmansdorff. Previously only one strong Thurn was listed here, called Thurn-Podwein, and it was a mansion of the Lords of Podwein, of whom it contained for three hundred years; like not exploring what kind of castles they owned. Only after a long search I found that Mr. Herward von Podwein owned this Thurn-Podwein in the 1331 year. ”Valvasor mentions MS as the source. Sitt, - (Manuscripta Sitticensis)

So it seems that the Podwein, at least in Carniola, had no other property
